This project looked at two methods for lowering construction costs through reductions in materials or improvements in quality: interlocking soil blocks and rammed-earth blocks. In addition, students experimented with porous concrete blocks and fired clay blocks for building evaporative coolers.

Chlorination Workshop

In the Santo Antonio favela, a local hospital provides chlorine solution for dosing water. D-Lab Development students worked with USP students, UFSCAR students, and community members to lead an educational workshop about the benefits of chlorination and instructions on how to appropriately dose their water.

Shea Oil Press Evaluation

Traditional shea nut oil production is an arduous 13-step process that women throughout West and East Africa use to supplement both incomes and diets. D-Lab students learned this traditional method from community members and compared it to a prototype shea oil press that reduces the process to 5-steps.

Portable Solar Battery Charger

In many rural communities, batteries are expensive and are burned after use. D-Lab students conducted field surveys with individuals and shop owners to gauge interest in a portable solar battery charger developed by Haddock Inventions that can help protect the environment while creating income generating opportunities.

Children's Playground

In the Santo Antonio favela, community members expressed a desire for a safe place for children to gather. Students from D-Lab, University of Sao Paolo and the Federal University of Sao Carlos worked together with the NGO Familia Ines to construct a playground to provide a place for neighborhood children to play.

Soccer Field Community Center

D-Lab Development students worked with the NGO Familia Ines in Santo Antonio in a participatory development workshop to identify the needs of the local community. The outcome was the construction of an outdoor soccer field shelter to be used as a community space in the favela.

Clean Birthing Kit Assessment

D-Lab students conducted interviews with mothers, midwives and health care workers to assess the applicability of the AYZH Janma Clean Birthing Kit, currently only available in India, to the context of rural women in Ghana. The kit provides all the tools needed for clean birthing conditions and can be assembled in country.

Bin-Bin Composting Toilet

D-lab students and community partners built a composting toilet that costs less than $70 USD (compared to $200 USD for a standard pit latrine). These toilets have the potential to help manage human waste and to produce fertilizer for crops. The system (shown here under construction) includes urine diversion and a separate composting bin.

Exploring Uses for Water Hyacinth

Water hyacinth is an invasive plant species that grows across lakes and rivers, sometimes doubling its size in just 7 days. It takes much effort to remove but is not currently considered useful post-removal. A D-Lab team explored alternative uses for this plant to incentivize its removal, including use as a packing material or for making charcoal.

Identifying Partners for D-Lab Urban

Students worked with Suprio Das to identify and meet community partners in the slums of Kolkata for a potential new class, D-Lab Urban. One project is with a women's cooperative which makes bags from recycled newspapers to generate income and requested technical assistance to improve production processes.
