Bearing Covers for Rickshaws

Students from the D-Lab Development class worked with a D-Lab Cycle Ventures team on improved rickshaw designs with the Rickshaw Bank, which was started by Dr. Pradip Sarmah to provide asset-based loans to marginalized rickshaw drivers. Students prototyped protective covers for the rear bearings.

Educational Workshops at a Boys Shelter

D-Lab students worked with the Society for Educational & Environmental Development to teach educational workshops at a boys shelter in a slum area of Calcutta. Activities adapted from the MIT Edgerton Center included building flashlights and making quizboards, which were used as learning aids for practicing vocabulary.

New Longoro-Hastings Educational Partnership

D-Lab has facilitated an educational exchange between Hastings Elementary School in Lexington and the primary and secondary schools in New Longoro and Dwere since 2008. Students taught lessons about electricity and wind energy to grades K-12 using pinwheels, kites, quiz boards and generators.

Water Pump

In Ze Miniero, a favela near Sao Paulo, the community members have electric pumps to get water from their wells, but electricity is available only intermittently. A team of D-Lab students worked with community members and USP students to run a workshop on how to build low-cost PVC pumps.

Construction Block Project

This project looked at two methods for lowering construction costs through reductions in materials or improvements in quality: interlocking soil blocks and rammed-earth blocks. In addition, students experimented with porous concrete blocks and fired clay blocks for building evaporative coolers.

Chlorination Workshop

In the Santo Antonio favela, a local hospital provides chlorine solution for dosing water. D-Lab Development students worked with USP students, UFSCAR students, and community members to lead an educational workshop about the benefits of chlorination and instructions on how to appropriately dose their water.

Shea Oil Press Evaluation

Traditional shea nut oil production is an arduous 13-step process that women throughout West and East Africa use to supplement both incomes and diets. D-Lab students learned this traditional method from community members and compared it to a prototype shea oil press that reduces the process to 5-steps.

Portable Solar Battery Charger

In many rural communities, batteries are expensive and are burned after use. D-Lab students conducted field surveys with individuals and shop owners to gauge interest in a portable solar battery charger developed by Haddock Inventions that can help protect the environment while creating income generating opportunities.

Children's Playground

In the Santo Antonio favela, community members expressed a desire for a safe place for children to gather. Students from D-Lab, University of Sao Paolo and the Federal University of Sao Carlos worked together with the NGO Familia Ines to construct a playground to provide a place for neighborhood children to play.

Soccer Field Community Center

D-Lab Development students worked with the NGO Familia Ines in Santo Antonio in a participatory development workshop to identify the needs of the local community. The outcome was the construction of an outdoor soccer field shelter to be used as a community space in the favela.
