Biomass Fuels & Cookstoves

Selected biomass fuels and cookstoves resources related to the off-grid energy sector compiled by MIT D-Lab energy researchers.

The Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves is a public-private partnership hosted by the UN Foundation to create a thriving global market for clean and efficient household cooking solutions. Their website contains many useful resources including a catalog of cookstoves and cooking fuels, a Fuel Analysis, Comparison & Integration Tool (FACIT), a global partner directory,  and a series of reports, case studies, and webinars.

D-Lab's Biomass Fuel and Cookstoves Group partnered with the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves on the Handbook for Biomass Cookstove Research, Design and Development. This is a practical guide covering key concepts of biomass cookstove design and strategies for improving stove performance and usability.

GIZ has compiled a practical guidebook for implementers of cooking energy innovation that provides information about planning and designing a cookstove intervention.

The Bioenergy Lists were created in 1993 to enable dialog on technical topics related to bioenergy. The user community and content in the searchable lists are vast and cover many topics.

The World Bank's Clean Stove Initiative (CSI) aims to share best practices and collaborative knowledge on clean cooking heating solutions around the world. CSI content and discussions can be accessed through Collaboration for Development (requires registration).

The Alternative Charcoal Tool (ACT) is a free planning tool which helps evaluate the feasibility of projects or enterprises that produce alternatives to wood-derived charcoal. Note: The ACT requires Microsoft Excel or OpenOffice.
