Instructor - Design for Scale

MIT D-Lab seeks a skilled and experienced instructor to co-teach the MIT class EC.729/2.729/EC.797/2.789 Design for Scale, an upper-level, 12-unit mechanical engineering class focused on the late stages of product design and manufacturing for users in low-income settings. The position is an exempt part-time job and one semester position, subject to renewal. Visa sponsorship is not available.

The class is taught annually during MIT’s fall semester (September through mid-December). Responsible to identify three to five class projects with established businesses, start-ups, and community partners in low- and middle-income countries such as India, Tanzania, or Nicaragua. Will offer input on pedagogy and syllabus design, co-teach, and be a thought partner for class direction based on the projects and student experience.

Partial funding is available for some student travel and out-of-country fieldwork related to this class over the January Independent Activities Period 

Job requirements

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • a minimum of three years of relevant manufacturing and/or product design experience
  • experience applying design for manufacturability
  • hands-on expertise with mechanical fabrication
  • expertise with value chain and other non-technical constraints with building appropriate products
  • excellent organizational, time-management, and oral and written communication skills.

Preferred

  • Master’s degree in engineering or an equivalent professional degree in engineering
  • experience in engineering, design, and/or manufacturing in low-income international settings, or
  • experience working with students in a project-based environment.
