Nicolás Maggio is CEO of Weatherizers Without Borders (WWB) and Fundación FOVISEE and is a Building Science Professor at Universidad Nacional de San Martín (UNSAM), Argentina. He works closely with two MIT D-Lab classes, Introduction to Energy in Global Development and Applications of Energy in Global Development, as a mentor, trip leader, and guest lecturer on building science.
Nico is a Latin American pioneer in building science and weatherization for low-income housing and informal settlements with 25 years of experience working at the intersection of housing, energy, poverty, climate change, and public policy, leading initiatives in Argentina, Chile, Perú, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, and Uruguay, collaborating with governments, universities, and organizations across Latin America and the United States. He has taught at the university level since 2003 and established the first Building Science and Weatherization Training Center in Latin America.
Working directly with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP), a federal initiative established in 1976, and the U.S. Department of Energy, he initiated the first effort to adapt the weatherization model to Latin American contexts. This work, supported by the U.S. Department of State, contributed to the implementation of weatherization programs that have reached thousands of low-income families, as well as to the development and teaching of building science as an interdisciplinary field connecting social and technical disciplines.
He holds a degree in Sociology from Buenos Aires University and was a SPURS Fellow (2023-2024) in the MIT Department of Urban Studies and Planning.
